National Institute of Personnel Management is the premier all-India Institute of professionals engaged in human resource and personnel management, industrial relations, labour welfare and human resource development. NIPM is a professional, non-profit-making society registered under Societies Registration Act, 1960.

It has a nation-wide membership of over 11,500 Individual Members and over 300 Institutional members spread over 52 chapters.

NIPM was established in the year 1980, after the merger with the erstwhile IIPM (founded in 1948 at Calcutta , now Kolkata) and NILM (established in 1950 at Bombay , now Mumbai). Its National office is located at Kolkata and chapters in most capital cities and major industrial towns all over the country.

NIPM is a member of the International Industrial Relations Association, Geneva (IIRA) and the Asian Pacific Federation for Personnel Management (APFPM), which in turn is affiliated to the World Federation of Personnel Management Association (WFPMA).

NIPM also regularly interacts with Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), UK , and Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), USA .

NIPM maintains close contact with International Labour Organisation (ILO), Geneva and its area office at New Delhi .  

NIPM also conducts a MBA Level 3-year’s Distance Learning course approved by AICTE, and awards the POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT (PGDPM), a prestigious professional qualification in the professional field of Personnel & HR.

 The Diploma is recognized by Government of India for the purpose of recruitment to superior posts & services under the Central Government and also by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra , Rajasthan, West Bengal , Goa , Bihar , Tamilnadu and Punjab as an approved qualification for appointment as Welfare Officers under the Factories Rules. The PG Diploma is further recognized by the Bihar University and the Andhra University , Waltair and University of Kerala as equivalent to Masters Degree.  Around 3200 students have already passed out from NIPM. Many of them hold key positions in the Public & Private sectors.
